The inspiration for this Pennsylvania country inn began when William Warner came to Eagles Mere in 1899 and discovered the beauty of Eagles Mere's highest point.
He returned in September of that year with 200 carpenters and craftsmen. By June of 1900, he officially opened the doors of the lovely Crestmont Inn's 110-room hotel. Many notables came for the ensuing summers to enjoy the beauty of Eagles Mere, and for tennis, boating, swimming in the pleasant waters of the natural lakes, and, of course, the Crestmont's famous meals.
The hotel passed onto William Warner's granddaughter and husband, Peggy and Tingle Dickerson, who operated the historic inn from the early 1930s through the summer of 1969.
When the hotel was sold in 1971, it passed through several owners until the Eagles Mere Conservancy bought the 320+ acre property. In 1981, the Conservancy sold the dilapidated hotel and fifteen acres atop the hill to Kathleen and Robert Oliver.
By this time, the grand dame of hotels had deteriorated beyond salvage, but through much labor, love, and effort, several of the smaller buildings were renovated and restored.
Today's Crestmont Inn at Eagles Mere includes two of those buildings.
The Inn's offices and dining room, formerly The Wash House (circa 1914), has been completely renovated and restored.
What once housed 24 ironing boards, enormous commercial mangles and washing machines, now includes two lovely dining rooms, a classic native custom cherry bar, and a gift shop.
The Evergreen Lodge (circa 1926) was the living quarters for the old Crestmont Inn's staff. The Lodge's forty small bedrooms and two bathrooms have been remodeled to include 15 bed and breakfast guest rooms and suites - all with private baths.
Today, guests may enjoy the lovely grounds, tennis courts, and flower gardens.
Though the old inn had to be torn down in 1982, the present inn owners Fred and Elna Mulford express the same friendliness, attention to detail, and gourmet meals that brought guests to the original Crestmont Inn at Eagles Mere.
We hope you enjoy pleasant memories of your Crestmont Inn / Eagles Mere vacation and return again soon.
